How to buy for Christmas
Christmas Shopping
Ah Christmas! Time to buy people you like things they like. Time to get things you don't like from people you hardly know, and hear people complain about people saying holidays instead of Christmas. Even though holiday starts with the word holy so . . . um never mind.
I did a lot of research on this and it turns out the best way to buy a gift is to think about it. Yes, it turns out that it is the thought that counts. The thought, turns out, is not about the gift, but the person your buying for.
The guys I asked about shopping for girls always said things like "pay attention before Christmas" and suggested things like writing it down if you can't remember that long. "You gotta know what they like" This approach only really works for the kind of girl that wants to be surprised by something. If you know she likes white gold and not yellow it's gonna be real easy to pick out something nice. Go platinum! One guy got his girl a Kureg coffee maker and a sofa cover "because she liked coffee and had a hole in her couch"
Now if you've been together for a bit and feel comfortable or if you plain don't know, just ask her. Try to make it low pressure. Ask it like "if you could have anything you wanted for Christmas what would it be?" This way she can feel free to say what she really wants without having to worry about weather your broke ass can afford it or not. If you listen close, even though she's naming off a bunch of things your broke ass can't afford, you can probably get a few clues. Example: my girl wants a new hunting bow, for deer season, but they are expensive, so she's getting new boots. She'll most likely do you a favor and drop in some movie titles and brand names that you could probably find at your income level.
If you know nothing at all about her, or you just forgot until the last minute, there are some things to redeem yourself. Gift cards, are fast easy and most people expect to get a couple each season, so if you know very little about her, you at least know what she likes to buy and where she likes to dine. If you can't impress her with the amount on the card, try to write something special on the card or box or whatever you put it in. I assume you won't just pull the naked card out of your dirty pocket and hand it over along with the lent and pubes usually found there.
We agreed that cash was a bad idea. We couldn't really decide exactly why, but it just seems too thoughtless. Almost like blatant prostitution. But, if you do it right you could get away with putting a wad if cash in a box and tell her your taking her on a shopping spree . . . If she's the kind of girl that loves to shop. . . and if you've put some thought into where you're going, she'll probably love it.
So if you wanna surprise her, think hard about her likes and interests. If she hates surprises or is hard to buy for, find a way to ask her what she wants. If all else fails then get her a gift card and personalize it. If none of these seem to work for you, your probably not that in to her and need some advise from my dad: "get rid of her before Christmas and don't get another girl until after Valentines Day. That way you don't have to buy anyone anything."
